While the boys are away...

We had some good girl time last week while the boys were gone at scout camp. It is shocking how quiet the house can be with the male half of the family gone all week. We took our time getting up in the morning, ate pancakes for dinner, the house stayed mostly clean and we planned our activities around what the girls wanted to do.
We went to the Zoo. The boys have no interest in the zoo anymore, so it was a good time to go. Turns out the zoo is a good place to go letterboxing. We found 4 letterboxes there. It was fun to have something to look for while we walked and walked.
We also did a little craft project. We covered these composition books with scrapbook paper and decorated them. They kept the girls busy for a while.
We also did a little school shopping, hit the free movies and saw The Tale of Despereaux and went out to lunch.
Of course they were just waiting all week for their cousins to get here. They had fun watching movies, doing fashion shows, going roller skating. Saturday morning we headed down to the Beaverton Farmer's Market.

As for the boys, they had a great week at scout camp.

They worked hard, played hard, showered seldom and generally had a great time. Cole and Sam got 7 merit badges each. Luke got 3 merit badges, did the mile swim and got a climbing award. A very productive week!

Luke & William

Last week Luke had his friend William in town for a visit. William was Luke's best friend in Texas. They lived in our neighborhood, were in the same primary class and in the same grade at school. Their birthday's were even within two weeks of eachother. This is a rare thing, and I think Luke has missed having a friend like this. He has plenty of friends at school but they are not members of the church and all his church friends are a year ahead of him in school. He doesn't hang out with any of these friends much outside of school or church. This could be my fault because I am not good at making plans to have my kid's friends over unless they are asking. And honestly, Luke is getting a little old to be having his mother make play dates for him.

At any rate, it was really nice for him to have a friend around. We had talked about doing this before and now that they are old enough to get on a plane alone we jumped at the chance to have him. Luke was excited to see him again and I think they had fun gossiping about all their old friends. I hope William had fun. When you ask a couple of teenagers "what do you want to do today?" You don't get much response. I took them to the OMSI and to the beach. The weather report was not good for the coast last week but I decided if we showed William anything in Oregon he must see Cannon Beach. We got about 2/3 of the way there and it was pouring rain. The kids all said I should just turn around and go home, but I was determined to go to the beach. It turned out to be a pretty nice day. The sun peeked out and it was about 68 degrees, which by my standards ain't too shaby for the Oregon coast. The water was even pretty warm and the kids all got wet. It was a good day.

Here they are 5 years ago at cub scout camp. They look so little.

And here they are now, almost 14 years old. Funny how William is almost the same amount taller than Luke as what he was 5 years ago.

I'm glad these two have stayed in touch. Now Luke wants to go to Texas next summer.

Sunriver, Part III

Part III - Swimming

Although the hiking and biking portion of our vacation may sound like we spent our whole week busy with physical exercise (and we did do quite a bit of that), do not be fooled - we had our fair share of lying around and relaxing too. We spent several days lounging on the beach at Elk Lake and Twin Lakes in the Cascade Lakes area. We liked Elk Lake much better, the beach was nicer and you can't beat this view.

The kids enjoyed floating around on some rafts and paddling around in these boats.

The water was actually quite warm but the air was not quite warm enough to entice me to get in. Don't worry, I amused myself just fine reading on the beach and watching everyone splashing around.

The chipmonks were out in full force everywhere we turned. They were not shy either and we no sooner turned our back and they were all over the picinic table where we left our lunch. One actually ran across Danford's chest as he was lying down with his eye closed. Hannah decided to try and get one to come take a chip off her tummy. She lay really still and waited. One came close but did not take the bait.

And all too quickly the week flew by and it was time to come home. I think we were all ready to get home and rest off the week. We all needed a good long nap. In our own beds!

Sunriver, Part II

Part II - Biking

Sunriver is a biker's paradise, with 35 miles of trails biking is probably one of the more popular pastimes there. Our favorite is the river loop trail, a 4 mile loop that goes past the main lodge, along the river and past the stables and the marina. It is a beautiful ride and not too long.
We made the loop several times. I did it twice with the girls and we had to stop and visit the horses. They both had a short pony ride. It is just a couple of trips around the corral. It was so hot on this day, I felt sorry for the poor ponies.
If you ride by at the right time, you can watch them take the horses out to pasture for the night.

Tyler really liked the horses. She wanted to ride a big one, but she was not old enough. I think you have to be 10. I have heard that the guided horseback rides are fun.

Another trail that we rode was the trail to Benham Falls. While most of the trails in Sunriver are paved, this one is a mountain biking trail. It is 8 miles round trip and quite rocky in a few places but mostly flat. I was a little concerned that Hannah would find it too difficult, but it is amazing how well she does when she is riding with Dad. Why is it that when she is with me on an easy paved trail she can complain and even stop a few times and refuse to go on, but she rides with Dad on 8 miles of dirt trail and she even has to stop and push the bike up a few hills and not a peep out of her!? Curious.

The trail ends at Benham Falls, and we got off our bikes to walk down a short trail to take in the scenery. The mosquitos were bad this year in Sunriver, but I have never in my life seen as many as we saw once we got close to the falls. We had to walk quickly because if you stopped you found yourself in a swarm. It was so bad that we rushed down to the falls, took a few quick pictures, and ran back to our bikes and rode like the wind to get the heck out of there.
Still, it was a lovely view.

Stay tuned, for Part III.

Sunriver, Part I

I am overwhelmed thinking about how to document our vacation last week. I have a headache from sorting through over 500 pictures from 3 cameras. How we took that many I have no idea. We certainly kept ourselves busy and had a great time though.

I think our activities can be categorized into three parts hiking, biking, and swimming. And so, I have decided to blog about them in three parts.

Part I - Hiking

We started our adventures hiking at Paulina Falls and Paulina Peak. We took a short trail down to these beautiful waterfalls.
The boys had fun hiking up to the falls.

Here is Luke behind the waterfall.

The girls were a little put out that they had to wait at the bottom.

We also drove up to Paulina Peak where there is a great view of the lakes and the obsidian flow.

We hiked the trail out to the overlook.

A beautiful view.

Another day we went up to Mt. Bachelor. We have been up before in the summertime. It is fun to ride up the ski lift and hike around up top.

There was still quite a few snow banks up there. The kids had fun climbing around on them. The sun sure does reflect off of that snow. It was almost blinding.

It is a beautiful view from up there on a clear day.

One thing I have always wanted to do is drive down to Crater Lake. It is one of those things that you just have to see, even though there is not much else to do there. It is a lot closer to drive there from Sunriver than from our house, so we decided to make the trip down there. I did not realize how cold it would be. And foggy. As we were driving up to the rim, the fog was so thick we could not see 2 feet in front of us. I began to think it was a wasted trip.

This is what it looked like. 44 degrees and foggy. That is supposed to be the lake behind me.
It did clear up though the further we went and we actually were able to see the lake, which I was begining to doubt.

We got out and hiked down this winding trail to the shore. It was a long way down, but there were some really pretty view points along the way.

Particularly here at this switchback.

To be continued...
